Pragat Foundation is a global youth-led nonprofit dedicated to expanding access to fundamental education through translation. We translate life-changing learning materials to eliminate linguistic barriers that disproportionately affect the non-English-speaking world. By doing so, we work to close the global knowledge gap and promote decolonized access to education.

What’s the problem?
Over 75% of the world doesn’t speak English, yet the vast majority of economic and social information is only available in English. This leaves over 6.4 billion people locked out of understanding the systems that shape their lives, leading to global inequality and the perpetuation of poverty.

Artificial Intelligence and machine learning tools’ translation can process content in seconds and is useful for quickly spreading information. But when it comes to economic and social education, accuracy and clarity are essential. Machine translations often fail to capture the correct meaning, especially in languages with limited online presence or digital tools.
Many widely spoken languages, including Indigenous and regional ones, are not included in most AI training data. This makes their machine translations unreliable or completely missing. Over 90 percent of funding for machine translation supports just ten languages, leaving billions without access to important knowledge in their own language.
Even for well-supported languages, machine translation can miss key ideas. It often struggles with context, tone, and cultural meaning. This can cause confusion or even spread misinformation, especially when translating content about people’s rights, public services, or financial systems.
Human translators help make sure that translations are accurate, complete, and culturally respectful. They review and improve automated drafts to reflect what communities actually need and understand. Machine translation is a helpful tool, but real impact comes from combining it with human insight.
